January 1st has finally arrived and I couldn't be happier to say goodbye to 2019. For those of you sipping mimosas or downing a bottle of Pepto on New Year's Day, I'm frantically typing this at 4:00pm on NYE, drinking a glass of Carmenere and trying to consolidate a year's worth of thoughts into one opening blog post when I have never blogged before in my life....
WELCOME TO THE NEW SALT & SHORE
Overall, 2019 has been one hell of a hard year but the silver lining is that with every crushed dream comes new goals!
If you've read this far and I haven't made your hangover worse, then I would like to formally welcome you to the brand new Salt & Shore!! A lifestyle brand, blog and online boutique focusing on Lowcountry life, style, business, and the courage to love and accept yourself.
Many of you may be scratching your head wondering what happened to the "booming candle business?"
SO LET ME TELL YOU......... AMAZON
I'm terribly sad to admit it, but Amazon is the best and worst thing that ever happened to businesses in 2019. Consumers (including myself) are enamored at the low prices, free shipping, and instant gratification of what is "AMAZON PRIME."
Businesses (especially start-ups) are crippled by the competition of Amazon and as much as I desperately wanted to open a brick and mortar, expand into other product arenas, and take Salt & Shore to a new level....when I went to talk to the bank I just couldn't make it happen....
Throughout this blog and new adventure (yay!) I will elaborate in much greater detail about the lessons I learned throughout the 2.5 years I tried to grow Salt & Shore as an e-commerce bespoke candle company, however
I'VE CRIED & LEARNED "NO" ONLY MEANS "NOT RIGHT NOW."
Owning my own business and being my own boss full-time just wasn't going to work for me anymore. When I started Salt & Shore I gave up SO much. A steady income, health benefits, retirement, weekends, holidays, friendships, vacations, getting my hair colored, new clothes.....so many things I took for granted when I was employed full-time and self-righteously pissed off at corporate America for actually having to "work"....
NOW, MY PERSPECTIVE HAS CHANGED & HERE WE ARE!
Over the last few months I have dug deep into what I want to do and the new journey I want to embrace. Can I tell you, writing this blog post is so incredibly hard, humiliating, humbling, and healing.
I am sure we all know what it feels like to "fail" at something when you really believe you could succeed. The sad and harsh truth of social media is that businesses and people can paint any picture they want and we followers believe it! Some may say I "talked a big game" but sometimes we don't know what we don't know and I didn't know the hurdles I was going up against.
I have journaled, prayed, and devoured Pinterest for inspirational quotes (as all basic girls do) and found something that has stuck with me the most.....
"A meaningful life is not about being rich, being popular, being highly educated or being perfect....it is about being real, being humble, being strong and being able to share ourselves and touch the lives of others."
So this my new journey. A new lifestyle that offers opportunity to touch others, share experiences and knowledge both good and bad. A place where being unapologetically human is mandatory, dry humor is appreciated and should you need to use curse words - that's okay too!
I plan to share with you all I can on business, friendships, marriage, sex, money, fashion, decorating, hostessing, etiquette as I know it....the ideas I have are endless.
My goal is to not be another blog to "follow" but to strip the expectation, make you uncomfortable enough to move your own mountains and within all of this, touch the lives of others to build something lovely.
As I always say, "stay salty and sweet"
